Sen. Robert Menendez, D-NJ

With the New Jersey Supreme Court hearing arguments next week, the tea party-led campaign to recall Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) is expanding its base of conservative support, with a dozen right-leaning legal organizations submitting an amicus brief in support of the recall push.

The Conservative Legal Defense and Education Fund, Institute on the Constitution, U.S. Justice Foundation, Gun Owners Foundation, Gun Owners of America Inc., Vision to America, the Lincoln Institute for Research and Education, Public Advocate of the United States, Inc., U.S. Border Control, U.S. Border Control Foundation, American Coalition for Competitive Trade, and the Constitution Party Committee all signed on to the brief last week.

Federal law does not allow for the recall of sitting senators. But supporters of the recall effort point out that New Jersey law allows for the recall of sitting statewide elected officials.

It’s not the first time the recall campaign has picked up the backing of conservative groups – in April the Sussex County and Atlantic County Republican parties announced that they were throwing their backing to the recall campaign.

The state Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case on May 25.
